August 19 - Friday Morning
Neveh Dekalim and Kfar Darom evacuated
Also on Friday morning, security forces evacuated Gush Katif's chief rabbi, Yigal Kamiski, from his home in Neveh Dekalim.
There were some 15 families remaining in the settlement, one day after the IDF completed the evacuation of Neveh Dekalim and Kfar Darom, the two settlements with the highest number of disengagement opponents.
Some 58 people were injured in the operation - among them at least 27 police officers, 14 protesters and 3 soldiers. The police officers were taken for tests at Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva, after a substance initially identified as acid was hurled at them. Early Thursday morning, an official at the hospital said the liquid may have actually been paint-thinner.
Some 225 of the protesters were arrested. Eighty-five of them have been detained at a Be'er Sheva jail. The detainees were held for questioning overnight, on suspicions of barricading themselves and participating in the violent clashes with police.
The final stage of withdrawing the two settlements came down to evacuating their synagogues, which took several hours. In Kfar Darom, dozens of youngsters barricaded themselves on the synagogue rooftop, and assaulted soldiers and police officers. Many police officers were injured in the clashes.
At Neveh Dekalim, nearly 1,000 people who had barricaded themselves in the synagogue emerged after lengthy talks with the security forces.
