Gunmen seize Fatah official

GAZA CITY: A representative of Faruq Qaddumi, the chairman of the ruling Fatah party, was seized in the Gaza Strip yesterday, just days after announcing the creation of a new "popular army", his office said.

Fatah official Suleiman Al Farra was snatched at gunpoint from his office in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis by armed men in plain clothes, witnesses said.

"We will not allow this criminal thing to take place and I will take tough measures against the kidnappers and those behind it if he is not released in the next 24 hours," the Tunis-based Qaddumi said in a statement.

The Fatah communique accused officers from preventative security, an internal security agency set up by Abbas, of arresting the man.

But officials from Palestinian preventative security refused to confirm or deny the charges.

Gunmen stormed two buildings in the Gaza Strip yesterday to protest the "kidnapping". The gunmen from Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades first took over a building in the town of Khan Younis owned by Palestinian Red Crescent Society and then seized a municipal building nearby. Neither building was occupied.

Last Tuesday, the official announced that Fatah has begun recruiting a "popular army" - responsible for helping to keep law and order after Israel's imminent pullout from the Gaza Strip.
