Fatah movement sets up volunteer militia in Gaza Strip

Report: Fatah movement sets up volunteer militia in Gaza Strip

By Haaretz Service

The Fatah movement has recently established a volunteer militia in the Gaza Strip, on the orders of Fatah chairman Farouk Kaddoumi, the Al Quds Al Arabi newspaper reported Tuesday.

The militia plans to preserve Palestinian quiet and stability in Gaza after Israel withdraws from the area, according to the paper, a Palestinian-owned daily.

Saleiman al-Farah, who runs the Fatah public relations office in the Gaza town of Khan Yunis, told Al Quds the militia was established to support the Palestinian Authority and protect Palestinian achievements.

He said 215 volunteers were recruited yesterday and that Fatah hopes to recruit a total of 1,500.

Al-Farah said any Palestinian who wishes to join the militia is eligible to do so. The volunteers will be subject to PA authority and will not receive a monthly salary.
