New Palestinian militia trained by Fatah in the Gaza Strip

Gaza, 2 August - At a football camp of Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip, hundreds of young men belonging to the Palestinian Fatah movement began military training as a first step to form a popular army. The Palestinian interior ministry did not release any statements to the press enquiring about the matter, but Mohammed Zuarub, in charge of the 350 men told Reuters that "we have been instructed to train those men to found the nucleus of the Popular Army ... The course will include military training, psychological, security and political teachings". Zuarub asserted the training of these militia had been ordered by Fatah leader Farouq Qaddoumi, but the latter denied, saying he didn't possess the means to pay for such an enterprise.

Reuters then asked a senior official of Fatah in the Gaza Strip, who requested to remain anonymous, about eventual decisions made by Mahmoud Abbas to set up the militia, but he also denied, saying that "the time now is to reinforce the Palestinian Authority and its security agencies and not to create new militias". Nevertheless, the training of the 350 armed men went on all through the day, without any interventions from the part of the Palestinian National Authority.
